There is another mega project in the works in Panama, or more accurately between Panama and Colombia. Panama and Colombia are planning a connection of their power grids across the Darien Gap. The hope is to have this connection operable by 2012. The power grid project will require a cash infusion of roughly $207 Million USD and will involve ISA on the Colombian side and Empresa de Transmision Electrica, S.A. on the Panama side. The joint venture will be named Intercolpa.

The Interamerican Development Bank is providing $1.5 Million USD for technical and environmental studies. The project will include expansion of substations on each side of the Panama Colombia border as well as connecting transmission lines the power grids of both countries.

The connecting transmission line between grids will be 381.5 miles long with 170 miles in Panama and 211.5 miles in Colombia.

Electric Power Grids and Panama Real Estate Investment

Panama has a booming economy and is making plans for the future. Mega projects such as the Panama Canal Expansion, Panama’s road improvement program, and Panama’s port improvements point to a strong economic future for Panama. Hydroelectric power plants on the Chiriqui River are being built help assure that Panama’s electric power needs are met well into the 21st century. Another facet of meeting future electric needs will be widening Panama’s power grid to connect to Colombia.

Panama has had a decade long run of North American retirees buying Panama real estate, increasing foreign investment, and expanding foreign trade relationships. Panama is wisely plowing money back into its infrastructure to promote jobs, more investment, and more prosperity. Panama has improved its credit laws further empowering its small business community.

So how does Panama real estate investment tie into this story? Panama real estate market was very hot for several years, especially on the high end. For those only interested in real estate investment in condos on the Bay of Panama this is a great time to buy during the pause in real estate price increases caused by global credit concerns. More to the point of the story is that Panama commercial real estate investment is tied to Panama’s forward thinking, democratic governance. Panama commercial real estate investment is likely to reap rewards for years if not decades to come as Panama’s infrastructure improvements bear fruit.

Near term Panama real estate investment opportunities include real estate in Colon Province, previously isolated and soon to be a short drive away from Colon and Panama City. Medium term Panama real estate investment opportunities are all over the place. Panama’s small business community needs offices, stores, warehouses, communications facilities and more. The purchase of Panama commercial real estate and leasing to local business ties one into Panama’s success without requiring daily attention to business details.
