Investor Protection and Panama Real Estate Investment
Panama is in the midst of an economic boom. Ever since the USA handed over the Panama Canal the world has ceased thinking of Panama as a US colony and increased its investment. Panama has the highest per capita foreign investment in Latin America. With high ratings for good governance Panama is seen a good place for investment in business and real estate. An issue one need look at for any investment in a foreign country is investor protection mechanisms under local law.
Panama’s banking privacy as well the asset protection mechanisms of Panama Bearer Share Corporations and Panama Private Interest Foundations attract money to Panama. Those who set up and operate Panama corporations and foundations have excellent asset protection. Those who invest in Panama in someone else’s business need expert advice regarding investor protection.
The Doing Business website provides indices for disclosure, director liability, and shareholder suits. Panama does not do as well in this category as in other ease of business areas such as doing business with other countries and ease of getting credit. This probably has to do with Panama’s asset protection laws. The difficulty of eating ones cake and having it too comes to mind.
