Panama Investment; Small Business, Real Estate, and More
While the world has been sinking into recession Panama has been adding jobs and growing its economy. This little country on the land bridge between Central and South America is planning for a brighter future. Panama is a great place to live with many opportunities for investment. Investment opportunities in Panama range from small businesses and residential housing to mega projects like the $5.25 Billion Panama Canal Expansion and hemisphere wide projects more appropriate to multinational corporations.
Panama Expanding Its Horizons
Just twenty years ago Panama was run by a military dictatorship. It was the site of the Panama Canal which was still under American control. The United States military ran war games in the Panama Canal Zone. In the early 1990’s Panama abolished its army and began laying the groundwork for later expansion.
When the US gave up administration of the Panama Canal at the end of 1999 the perception of Panama as a US colony finally went away. However, Panama’s major trading partner was still the USA and still is. However, over the last few years Panama has negotiated free trade deals with Singapore as well as Costa Rica. A free trade pact with Canada is in negotiations now. And, of course, the free trade pact with the United States is awaiting US Senate ratification.
The point of this is that Panama is widening its economic horizons. The days of Panama being a sleepy little country with a big ditch running through it are long gone.
Panama is fast becoming a transportation hub with the canal, the Pan American Highway, Tocumen International Airport, and expanded and improved port facilities on both ends of the canal. Even the oil pipeline built years ago to move Alaska North Slope oil across the isthmus on its way to US gulf refineries is being taken out of mothballs to move African crude towards the US West Coast.
Canadian Investment in Panama
Speaking of the Panama Oil Pipeline Canada’s Export Development Canada will loan $35 Billion (US) to the operators of Panama’s pipeline, Petroterminales de Panama. This money will in turn go to pay Svitzer Canada Limited for marine services at the oil storage facilities associated with the pipeline.
This deal is touted in Canada as an entry into a growing market in Latin America centered in Panama. Along with the ongoing trade negotiations delegations of business representatives from Canada have been visiting Panama looking for prospects.
Panama Investment, Business, and Real Estate
And the delegations of Canadians visiting Panama bring us to the point of this tale. Panama is attracting business and investment. All of those businesses need locations and are a boon to ongoing real estate investment in Panama.
Everything in Panama from new oil storage facilities to better roads to upgraded container shipping yards provide employment when they are being built, jobs when in operation, and lease payments to property owners.
