Copa Airline is the national flag airline of Panama. In a recent expansion Copa Airline added five new destinations, increased it fleet, and promoted the further expansion of Tocumen International Airport, its hub. Copa Airline refers to its facilities at Tocumen as “The Hub of the Americas.” Panama’s Tocumen is already on its way to becoming the major hub airport for all of Latin America.

Panama is the narrowest point in the Americas where the Panama Canal connects Atlantic and Pacific. This tropical country has untouched rain forest and pristine beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Panama also has a first world infrastructure with the best roads, airports, ports, and telecommunications in Latin America. Panama is currently enjoying an economic boom fueled by foreign investment.

Panama is a natural transportation hub. It is at the junction of Central and South America. Panama is the site of the Panama Canal and the South end of the Pan American highway before it restarts in Colombia. Panama’s Copa Airline is uniquely positioned from Tocumen airport in the middle of Latin America with 45 destinations to North, Central, and South America as well as the Caribbean.

Copa Airline’s Success and Panama Investment

Copa Airline has been in business since the 1940’s. It expansion has largely occurred since the 1990’s. Copa Airline’s August 2008 press release states that, “Because of the expansion and the modernization of Tocumen International Airport, headquarters of the Hub of the Americas, Copa Airline has been able to expand the number of destinations and frequency of flights it offers. The hub's future growth will be facilitated by the recent opening for international bidding on construction of the airport's new terminal and infrastructure.”

Copa Airline’s press release goes on to quote Tocumen’s general manager as saying that, “The new terminal demonstrates the national government's ability to promote its vision for domestic and international growth and development. The new terminal is key for positioning and strengthening Tocumen as a preferred hub world wide, and as means to facilitate commercial and tourism activity in the country."

Obviously Copa Airline’s press release is meant to be self congratulatory. However, Panama does have a pro business and pro investment climate. Panama is plowing investment money into improving its infrastructure. Panama’s economy is booming and real estate values have come up along with increasing Panama investment over the last ten years.

Panama’s Tocumen airport is naturally placed as a Latin American hub and as such helps attract tourists, residents, and investors to Panama.

Copa Airline’s ongoing success and plans bode well for Panama’s long term real estate investment prospects. For the second home buyer there are coastal and rain forest getaways only an hour or two from Tocumen and thus only a couple of hours from access to the world. For the eco tourist there connecting flights from Tocumen into the indigenous areas of Panama making a walk with untouched nature only a few hours from New York and Chicago.

As Latin American trade barriers fall and Latin America prospers more and more traffic passes through Tocumen creating jobs and increasing Panama’s prosperity.
