Panama Culture - The Colorful Clothing in Panama

Usually, the way the people dress in a place speaks of the history and the culture of the country. This is very true with the clothing in Panama. The pollera is considered as the national clothing in Panama for women as well as the Panama hat for the men. This dress is usually being used for many Panama activities and attractions. It is being worn with a lot of jewelries and hair accessories, making it an unforgettable symbol of Panama culture.

This attire of Panama culture has a long history; the pollera was the apparel of servants and nursemaids during the Spanish colonial era. It was first worn only indoors but eventually was enhanced and made its way into the public eye. This well-adorned clothing in Panama has its humble beginnings in the quarters of the rustic maidens to the aristocracy of fashionable women enjoying the attractions and activities of Old Panama.

The pollera consists of the upper part or gown, the skirt and petticoat. The upper part is off shoulders blouse with ornaments such as ruffles and laces in very colorful designs. The skirt is also as elaborate as the blouse and they have the same motif. Trimmings are usually hand-made thread lace.

This very unique clothing in Panama looks more elegant with ornaments called tembleques. These are exquisite combs with different embellishments such as pearls and gold. They serve as crowns for the beautiful Panamanian ladies. And to complete the attire, women wear large gold earrings made from corals or pearls. During the carnival days (usually 4 days before Ash Wednesday), the streets are adorned with the beauty of this elegant clothing in Panama.

Another popular part of the clothing in Panama is the Panama hat. Basically, these hats are made from palm straws, also called paja toquilla. It is funny somehow that these were called Panama hats when their origin is from Ecuador.

In the 1700s, the panama hats were exported to the Isthmus of Panama. The workers used these hats during the construction of the Panama Canal. Since the Panama hats are woven, they are perfect for blocking the sun and they are a lot comfortable since they allow air to come in.

These hats gain their popularity when Teddy Roosevelt wore a Panama hat when he visited the Panama Canal. Even Hollywood stars wore these hats, contributing to a unique fashion statement.

If you will take a tour to Panama, make sure to have with you the appropriate clothing in Panama in relation to the weather or climate here. Most of the time, Panamanians wear casual clothing. Fill your suitcase with light weighted clothes since it can be hot in Panama. A light suit can be worn if you will pay a visit to the government offices. Don't forget to bring with you a bathing suit. However, if you will be going to Panama in May to November, bring with you a rainwear since it is rainy season during this period. Above all, make sure to experience the clothing of Panamanian culture by enjoying the traditional activities and attractions that the country has to offer.
