Panama Real Estate is Still a Great Deal
Real estate in Panama continues to be a good investment. While the rest of the world is in a recession Panama’s economy has slowed but is still producing growth and jobs. Currently the high end of the housing market is in a pause due to temporarily decreased North American housing demand. This fact has provided an opportunity for some great deals in high end Panama housing. Panama’s free trade agreement with the USA seems to be back on track along with a free trade pact under negotiation with Canada. Panama’s continued success in foreign trade keeps Panama’s commercial real estate market strong.
From the viewpoint of North American tourists, as well as residents, Panama’s boom has had to do with expatriates seeking residency and tourists looking for a place in the sun. Foreigners are certainly coming to Panama to retire and walk on the beach or to do business. However, the strength of Panama’s economy and its real estate market has to do with the strength of Panama’s economy and its position in world trade.
Forty percent of Latin American container shipping passes through the Panama Canal. Colon Free Zone which is the second largest duty free zone in the world receives and reships to and from the entire world. Panama has the highest per capita foreign investment in Latin America. In 2008 when the US, Europe, Japan, and industrial Asia were slipping into recession Panama added jobs and its economy grew by 9 percent.
ABPanama does business throughout the country and has made a business of finding retirees the homes of their dreams. However, our strong suggestion of real estate investment in Panama is commercial real estate. Commercial real estate grows with Panama’s economy. Commercial real estate is free of rent controls. Commercial real estate benefits from such things as Panama’s free trade deals with Costa Rica, Singapore, and other. Commercial real estate will get another boost when the free trade deal with Canada is signed and when the US senate passes the currently stalled free trade deal between Panama and the USA.
According to press reports the Obama administration is not going to erect trade barriers in the midst of a recession. In fact, it appears that the Obama administration is going to put some of its previous reservations aside and push for ratification of free trade treaties with Korea and Panama. In fact, it looks like the free trade deal with Colombia, Panama’s next door neighbor, has second life too. Considering that goods traveling from the US West coast to Colombia’s Caribbean ports needs to pass through the Panama Canal that will be another boon for Panama.
