Protectionism Makes No Sense with the USA and Panama

Labor unions in the United States are opposing the United States – Panama Free trade agreement on the basis that it will take jobs away from US workers. There are three flaws to this argument. The first is that expanded trade tends to favor all workers and competitive products. The second is that Panama already has favored trade status with the USA while the USA does not have favored trade status with Panama. Third, Panama is not a big industrial power. Panama exports cantaloupe and watermelon to the USA and it is the US agricultural states that are arguing in favor of the agreement!

Panama real estate has been a good investment for a decade and remains a good investment going forward. Prices are off a bit due to economic factors and will soon rise again benefiting those with the foresight to invest in residential or commercial real estate now.

The Caribbean Coast near Colon has been a focus of a number of our articles due to road improvements making previously hard to reach areas accessible. Throughout Panama the road building campaign has opened up areas where excellent property is available at prices of a decade ago.

Not all real estate in Panama goes to housing and commercial purposes however. Panama’s Arco Seca is its breadbasket where Panama agriculture prospers. The cattle business in the Azuero Peninsula reminds one of the American west. This area was settled by the Spanish four hundred years ago and the self reliant culture of the vaquero remains alongside the internet, SUV’s, and modern farming and ranching techniques.

This area, in fact, is the oldest inhabited area of Panama with archeological remains going back 11,000 as seen in the remains of a village in Sarugua National Park near Chitre in Los Santos Province. If you like the idea of living where there is a long history of life Cerro Hoya National Park in the other corner of the Azuero Peninsula has rock formations that date from the times of the dinosaurs. This area did not get covered by glaciers a mile thick, like northern North America so there has been a continual stream of life in this part of Panama for millions of years.

Fast forward to the present and you see real estate opportunity all over the Azuero Peninsula at a time when prices are down before the next surge.

With all that sense of history it helps us put the free trade discussion in perspective. It will get ironed out and no matter how it happens Panama is going to grow, continue to improve services, remain democratic, and provide a nice life in paradise for many years to come.

This is the time to take advantage of easy residency requirements, move to Panama, look around and build the house of your dreams on a piece of property in paradise.

Come to talk to us at ABPanama about real estate opportunity in Panama.
