Panama’s employment numbers are good. Considering the mess most of the world is in Panama’s 5.6 percent increase in employment through August of 2008 is spectacular. While the world sinks into recession Panama is still creating jobs. Panama’s construction sector creates jobs as do the government infrastructure projects such as road and port improvements. More jobs have helped reduce poverty in Panama. The ease and cost of doing business in Panama along with Panama’s ideal location for doing business has attracted multinational corporations to Panama creating even more jobs.

According to Panama government figures one million four hundred twenty-two thousand people have jobs in Panama. Construction jobs stand out, perhaps because we see the work on high rises every day in Panama City. However, there are more jobs in general business and commerce than in construction. Agriculture also provides more jobs than construction although in the last couple of years jobs in agriculture have gone begging as young men and women have moved to Panama City for better paying jobs, construction or otherwise.

As Panama’s banks did not follow the US example of sub prime mortgages they still are solvent and loaning money. Construction projects and other business projects are going ahead. Every new business creates jobs and pays wages. Every paid employee spends his or her money creating more jobs. Panama is not injecting bailout money into the economy to create jobs. The Panama jobs machine, know as small business, is creating jobs as well as wealth for Panama’s middle class.
