Canada’s new ambassador to Panama announced that starting in January 2009 Panamanians and Canadians will be able to fly directly between Tocumen International Airport and Toronto, Canada. Panama’s efforts to expand its trade relationships with countries such as Canada are bearing fruit. The next round of free trade negotiations between Canada and Panama are scheduled to take place in Panama in December 2008.

Students, tourists and business people will be able move directly between Panama and Canada with the new aviation agreement. Many Panamanians study in Canada. In fact, many of Panama’s doctors train and get certification in their specialties in Canada.

Panama Canada Free Trade

Panama is expanding its trade relationships. A free trade agreement with the United States is awaiting US senate approval. Panama and Canada began negotiations on a free trade agreement in 2008 and these are moving forward.

Panama’s economy is growing despite a global recession in the works, as is investing in panama. Panama’s efforts to expand its trade network will help protect Panama from the ups and downs of worldwide business cycles. Much of the traffic through the Panama Canal is shipping going to or coming from the USA. However, as Latin American economies grow, traffic to and from Latin America grows too thus protecting Panama from economic problems in the USA.

Panama and Canada both have conservative banking systems and therefore do not have the large number of bad loans to deal with that the USA has. Thus both countries expect to weather the economic storm caused by bad credit. Canada expects to be able to sell its products to Panama and, perhaps more importantly, to use Panama’s unique position at the cross roads of the Americans to expand Canada’s markets in Latin America.
