Just twelve miles off shore from Panama City, Panama is the beautiful island of Taboga. Taboga Island, Panama dates back to the times of the conquistadors. Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of Peru had a home on Taboga, Panama in the 1500's. The first European to set foot on the island was Vasco Nunez de Balboa who was the first Spaniard to see the Pacific Ocean in 1513. Today the "island of flowers" is a great day trip just an hour by ferry from Panama City.

Panama has two sea coasts, the Pacific and the Caribbean. On both coasts you can find islands with white sandy beaches, islands near great fishing, and islands to buy and build a home. For a quick look at a Panama island try Taboga, just an hour's ferry ride from the pier on Amador Causeway outside of Panama City.

How to Get to Taboga, Panama

Take a taxi to Amador Causeway from Panama City and ask for the ferry to Taboga. If the taxi driver is uncertain ask to stop at Isla (Eez la) Naos or Naos Island which is the first island on the causeway. The pier is in back of the first restaurant on Naos.

Current morning departures are 8:30 am weekdays and 8:30 am weekends and holidays. Call 314-1729 to check times. Plan to get to the pier an hour before scheduled departure. The last ferry leaves Taboga, Panama at 4:30 pm weekdays and 5 pm weekends and holidays. Current round trip fare is $11 for adults and $7 for retirees and children.

Taboga Island, Panama

The largest portion of Taboga, Panama is a forested nature preserve covering 80 % of the island. There are hiking trails onto the forest covered volcanic cone that is Taboga, Island. The village of San Pedro is quaint with lots of flowers, inexpensive restaurants, and a couple of hotels and local rooms for rent at very reasonable prices if you would like to stay the night.

Beaches on Taboga Island

The Taboga Beach Resort in front of town will let you use their beach or pool for a price. However, if you turn right off the pier you can use the beach for free. A beach umbrella will rent for $5 and chairs for $1 each. A lunch of lots of large shrimp, salad, patacones (or French fries or rice) and a beer will cost you $9. Expect to pay 50 cents each usage for the bathroom, changing room, and 3 minutes of shower to wash off the sea water.

The beach is clean as is the water. The water is tropical warm.

Don't forget your sun screen. The nice breeze and water can fool you into forgetting that you are in the tropics.
