Interoceanic Highway; Route to Development and Prosperity on Panama's Caribbean Coast

Work on Panama's interoceanic highway continues toward completion according to an article in February in La Prensa. Despite unusual rain for Panama's summer or dry season work continued 24 hours a day on pilings for the highway bridge across the Chagres River in Central Panama.

Paving of the Panama interoceanic highway began in April with an anticipated finishing date of April 2009. The investment of over $200,000,000 in US dollars is expected to greatly improve travel and transportation of goods by land across the isthmus. It is expected that economic growth will be stimulated along the corridor and especially in Colon City and the currently undervalued adjacent Caribbean coast.

Infrastructure Development in Panama and Throughout the Region

Panama has the highest per capital investment from the USA of all Latin American countries. As such Panama is seeing phenomenal economic growth and development. With this economic boom come great investment opportunities throughout the country and especially on the Caribbean with the completion of the new Panama interoceanic highway.

Colon has often had to play the poor sister to Panama City but now that the Panama interoceanic highway is nearing completion the trip from Panama to Colon will become a commute of less than an hour. Property values around Colon are expected to rise substantially making today´s Caribbean real estate prices cheap in comparison. In addition to the effects of the new road, the beautiful coast of Colon Province is opening up to investors and home owners. With local road improvements, previously difficult to reach beach front is becoming very accessible. Most of the land offered in the Costa Abajo area is in large lots of 60 acres and larger. Nevertheless, asking prices for these properties are in the $3 to $4 per sq meter range. $3.33 a square meter is $13,320 per acre for beach front Caribbean property in pristine condition. One acre lots and smaller typically sell for up to $300,000 on the Pacific coast and in Bocas del Toro $100,000 for a half acre lot is a good price.

In addition to its own initiatives Panama is also part of Plan Puebla Panamá, a regional development plan including the southern Mexican states, all of Central America, and Colombia. This development plan, eventually to be funded by fifty billion in US dollars is expected to integrate transportation, telecommunications, electric grids, highways, and port and airport facilities. Expect Panama to become more economically competitive throughout the region and the world. Expect Panama to improve on its geographic position on the land bridge between North and South America. Soon the Panama interoceanic highway will complement to Panama Canal for cross-isthmus transit of goods.

Don't forget, by the way, that Panama is the southernmost part of the Inter-American Highway before it reemerges from the Darien in Colombia. The combination of transport along the Pacific trade route through Central America to Mexico and the Panama interoceanic highway across the Isthmus of Panama will greatly facilitate transport of goods, reduce costs, and continue to make Panama more economically competitive.

Panama is in for a prolonged economic boom. From American retirees to European taking advantage of the cheap dollar tourist and retiree money is coming into Panama. Panama banking and Panama vehicles for protecting the privacy of financial assets continually attract investment capital. As noted above private American investment is high in Panama and regional financial institutions are funding regional projects including in Panama. This boom will last for decades. Expect your investments in Panama to prosper for years to come.
