Panama and Northwest Florida to Discuss Trade
Panama has become a leading export market for businesses in the Florida panhandle. A trade delegation from the Florida panhandle (Florida’s Great Northwest) is scheduled to visit Panama in January of 2009. While a free trade treaty awaits United States senate ratification business leaders are going ahead with their plans.
A November 7, 2008 article on the Panama City, Florida NewsHerald.com web site discusses plans for a trade delegation from Northwest Florida to visit Panama in January 2009. The article notes that Panama has become a substantial market for goods from Northwest Florida, also known as the Florida “panhandle.” Panama imported 1.2 Billion USD in goods from Northwest Florida in 2007 and 2008 numbers appear to be more than 30% higher.
In addition to exporting to Panama, Northwest Florida has just developed the capacity for container shipping through the Panama Canal to Peru and Chile.
Panama
Panama is the narrowest point in the Americas where the Panama Canal connects Atlantic and Pacific. This tropical country has untouched rain forest and pristine beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Panama also has a first world infrastructure with the best roads, airports, ports, and telecommunications in Latin America.
Panama is currently enjoying an economic boom driven by foreign investment and its ideal location at the junction of two oceans and two continents. A flood of North American retirees attracted by easy residency laws have made their homes in Panama in the last decade.
Panama Trade, Business, Real Estate and Investment
Five percent of world trade passes through the Panama Canal and when the Panama Canal expansion project more than doubles capacity that percentage could go up. For years Panama was a transit point for ships moving between oceans. In 1999 the United States handed to Panama Canal over to Panama. At the point the world’s perception of Panama as a US colony went away. Currently Panama has the highest per capita foreign investment in Latin America. Panama’s economy is growing at about 10% a year. Panama appears to be the place to invest, do business, and sit out the world economic crisis.
Panama is investing in its infrastructure with more and better roads, upgraded port facilities, airport expansion, and telecommunications upgrades. Panama City, Panama offers its businesses first world infrastructure and services. Business within Panama, more than the Panama Canal, is what is driving Panama’s economic expansion.
Panama recently upgraded its credit laws making credit checks easier and thus credit more available to Panama’s small business community.
