Low Cost of Aviation Fuel Results in Cheaper Flights to Panama
And here you thought that the days of cheap flights to Panama were dead and gone. Surprise, the credit crisis that started in the USA and has spread throughout the world has a bright side. Along with the drop in the price of a barrel of oil there has been a drop in the cost of aviation fuel. Maybe cheap flights to Panama are back!
The November 12, 2008 edition of La Prensa notes that COPA Airlines who is Panama’s flag carrier is charging $20 less for flights within Central America. According to La Prensa COPA will be adjusting prices for other destinations according to the specifics of each destination. Other airlines such as TACA and KLM are also reducing fares, or rather the fuel surcharge part of the fare. KLM reports a 37% reduction in their transatlantic surcharge.
West Texas crude, a benchmark oil closed below $60 a barrel on November 12, 2008 whereas it sold for up to $150 a barrel in July 2008.
Fuel Costs, Inflation, and Cheap Flights to Panama
For many Panamanians an airplane flight, cheap or not, is just a dream. However, Panama’s middle class is doing better year by year. Canada and Panama just announced direct flights between Canada and Panama making business travel, vacations, and student travel easier.
